Shutter Classroom repurposes the idle shutter of closed shops for teaching at night, in an interactive fashion. Open information in a public space will increase their access and curiosity for the material, while the element of interaction will gamify the process of imparting education. This ensures that the student will share a long-term interaction with the information on the shutter, facilitating inquiry-based learning, thereby helping him/ her to grasp it better.

CHALLENGE


The majority of children from poor socio-economic backgrounds in urban slums in India are devoid of learning resources, thereby failing to reach even rudimentary benchmarks of literacy. Moreover, the lack of infrastructure and opportunities deprives them of mediums that can facilitate the right teaching methods, if at all any. This lack of opportunity since the beginning leads to a decrease in their desire to gain an education for growth and progress.


FUNCTIONALITY


Charging: The shop owner charges the battery through a retractable cord which can be pulled out and connected to a charging point inside the shop. When shutting the shop, he pulls out the wire, which gets retracted. He then switches on the installation via a switch provided next to the cord outside the shop.

Standby Mode: When the sensors don’t detect an entity / group within a 7 feet radius, the LED's will be on standby mode, glowing dimly, which saves power. The standby mode will have all 7 colors of the LED frame glowing consecutively in a loop, which will help attract the children to the shutter.

Active Mode: As soon as someone within the stated radius is recognized, the LED's will switch to active mode, creating a bright white frame for lighting around the shutter, thus making the information clear and easy to read. It will be simultaneously be followed by a voice message, introducing the child to the installation.

Interaction: When a child touches a particular element (eg alphabet), it will activate the voice message assigned to that element. Simultaneously, the LED's for that moment will switch to another color.  As soon as the hand is taken away, it will go back to the default white light mode.
